The Philadelphia Network of Designers will be holding their first ever gala on June 7, 2009 at 4 p.m. at the Independence Visitors Center  in Philadelphia, P.A. During this time, an awards ceremony will take place where the organization will honor the legacy of Willi Smith, a Philadelphia-bred fashion designer who became one of the most successful African American designers of his time.

The gala will include a brief showing from members of the Philadelphia Network of Designers, in addition to students of fashion from Philadelphia area fashion and art schools.

Willi Smith, together with Laurie Mallet started Willi Wear, which became one of the most successful fashion brands of its time. At the time of his death, Willi Smith was heralded by the New York Daily News as one of the most successful black fashion designers of his time. The Philadelphia Network of Designers is hoping to start fashion initiatives to be launched throughout the city of Philadelphia – while working with the youth to create a better Philadelphia.

The organization’s mission of empowering and educating the youth of Philadelphia has been an individual lifelong mission for each of the founding members: Thomas Tillman Jr., Juanita Beasley, and Tyren Keithpatrick. The Philadelphia Network of Designers seeks to create a network of fashion industry insiders in Philadelphia so that budding designers and fashionistas will have a place to call home.
